Let’s set context here- we bought a small, very old farmhouse that basically had an interior resembling a pine explosion in a 70’s backwoods lake cabin! We have slowly (but surely) been remodeling the place, and although its small it screams BIG character!!
So long story short- this nursery was an old closet space that we were using for our two girls- so we had to make the space feel larger while maintaining functionality and design. Our entire house has a “rustic meets modern” feel: in fact the color pallet is vast!… It consist of black, white, and oak. So for starters I knew I wanted a statement wall. What better way to set the tone for the space than with a black shiplap wall! The color is Tricorn Black from Sherwin Williams. Also, knowing that I wanted to introduce masculine accent’s and decor, the shiplap wall provided a much more sturdy wall to mount/secure/properly affix all of my decor on to ensure the safety of our little man. The wall is slightly over 8ft wide so finding functionality in the small space was tough. This room used to serve as the closet for our two little girls. I also wanted rustic elements to tie in with the Modern style crib from, West Elm. Much of the decor was discovered around at local flea market- being in the Heart of the Ozarks, finding a steer skull was not tough thankfully.
I played with a few different shades of black. Surprisingly, it was more difficult choosing my shade of black than choosing my shade of gray!
On the other side of the room is our changing table area (shameless awesome wife plug) where thankfully I don’t spend much time. My wife is incredible and tends to the diapers 9 outa 10 times- poopie diapers are not my strong suit and I am not afraid to admit it! But adding to the masculine feel of the space I wanted a picture somewhere that screamed little boys room. Frank Sinatra (my fav artist and pop culture icon) quotes are where I started my search, until I came across a cute booth in a flea market nearby. Alas, settling on a John Wayne quote sign was note really “settling” at all! In fact, it fit the space perfect!
Personalization was one thing my wife introduced me to via Carousel Design. We were looking for something to set off the crib and statement wall and a personalized crib sheet was everything we wanted and more. They had so many cool fonts and designs to choose from, but we tried to stay as simple as possible considering the space had already become a little more busy than I had intended, but we freaking love it!
Just a few finishing touches remain but I keep getting so many questions on it I wanted to share!! I understand the design is not for everyone, but I am completely over the moon with it considering the entire nursery is hardly over 100 sqft!
What is your favorite part of the nursery??
